G1 Transformers Spotlight – Dinobot Slag

After putting together Autobots like Ratchet and Ironhide, and giving Megatron his time in the spotlight, I wanted to add something a little more wild to my growing LEGO Transformers BrickHeadz collection. That’s where the Dinobots come in—and who better to continue with than Slag, the hot-headed Triceratops warrior.

Slag has always been a hothead and always wants smoke. He’s not the calm, collected type—he’s brash, quick-tempered, and sometimes a little too eager to fight. But that’s exactly what makes him such a fun character to bring into BrickHeadz form.

Why Slag?

The Dinobots have always stood out in the Transformers lineup. They’re Autobots, sure, but they don’t exactly play by Optimus Prime’s rules. They’ve got their own streak of independence, and Slag embodies that rebellious fire better than anyone.

Plus, his design is striking—red body, grey face, massive yellow horns and frill—it’s the kind of look that translates perfectly into LEGO bricks.

The Build Process

I knew going in that Slag wouldn’t look like a “standard” Autobot BrickHeadz. His design needed to feel heavier, more primal, and unmistakably Dinobot.

  • The Head & Face: I gave him a blocky red head, accented with bright blue eyes to keep that classic G1 feel. His faceplate is grey, helping him stand apart from the more humanoid Autobots in my collection.
  • The Frill & Horns: This was the defining challenge of the build. Using curved yellow bricks, I built a wide frill behind his head, with white horn pieces poking out at either side. It immediately gave him that unmistakable Triceratops look.
  • The Body: I kept his chest red with some layering to suggest armor plating, while his legs are topped with yellow pieces—tying back to his dinosaur alt-mode colors. The compact body still gives him that stocky, strong silhouette.

When I was finished, I couldn’t stop smiling—he looked every bit the stubborn Dinobot I grew up with.

Why This Build Matters to Me

Slag is more than just another Autobot—he represents the sheer fun of the Dinobots. They were always the loose cannons, never afraid to clash with Decepticons or their own teammates. Building him in BrickHeadz style felt like a chance to celebrate that chaotic energy while still keeping him cute and displayable.

Seeing him on my shelf next to the others adds a whole new vibe—Megatron might look menacing, Optimus’s crew look steadfast, but Slag? He looks like he’s two seconds away from charging headfirst into battle.

Final Thoughts

Bringing Slag into BrickHeadz form has been one of the most satisfying builds so far. He’s colorful, unique, and instantly recognizable—just the way a Dinobot should be.

Now I’m already thinking about the rest of the team. Grimlock may be the obvious centerpiece, but having Slag here makes me want to build all five Dinobots in BrickHeadz form. A whole squad of them on display? That would be the ultimate collector’s dream.
